1st off, when I first listened to HD800s I could tell they were something special, but there also something just not quite right with them. I had seen all the frequency charts showing how flat their response was supposed to be, but that was not what I was hearing. I knew I had heard this psychedelic sound signature in the past. And I had, back when I was experimenting with cable designs I had built some silver-plated ofc cables and I hated them. To me they were one of the worst material combinations ever. The 2 materials have such total different electrical signal transmission speeds, that you gets this "surround sound" effect with all kinds of frequency delays, high-end distortion and weak bass. Not an accurate audio conductor in my opinion.
So sure enough, when I checked the specs, Sennheiser used silver plated ofc conductors! No idea why. It really makes me wonder if anybody ever listens to a headphone before they send it to production.
Anyway, post Zeus Quad24 OCC copper cable installation, HD800s sounded organic and natural. No goofy surround sound time delay effects. Everything improved. No detail smearing, highs were crisp and clear. Cymbals sounded like cymbals and not just some high frequency "splash" sound. Quite honestly, with that stock cable, I don't think I would have kept them. They are definitely keepers now.
Next phase to come... After extensive burn-in and listening sessions, something still seemed a little off. I know what my Zeus cables should sound like, and I just felt like something was still affecting the sound. So I tore them apart and sure enough, there I find more silver plated ofc copper. Connectors do not go directly to drivers. There is more wire. So, next phase is coming end of this week when I get more Quad22 OCC copper. Connectors are gone and I'm hard-wiring directly to the drivers. This totally eliminates that dam silver-plated ofc and about 5 unnecessary connections in the signal path. Wire to connector, connector to connector, connector to wire, wire to driver soldering tab, tab to voice coil pin. I'm excited to hear them with the Zeus Quad22 soldered directly to drivers. I attached a pic for you of the inside.
I finished hard-wiring my HD800s with Quad22 OCC Copper. Absolutely stellar results! They are now the best sounding HD800s anywhere. They have more bass than T1s now. That pic I sent you of the inside with the wires going from connector to driver, well that wire is only 33-34awg. My wire strippers only go down to 32awg and those wires are smaller than that. No wonder they never sounded like $1400 headphones should!!! Of course, now with Zeus cable they are closer to $2K, but they are the best headphones currently available.
