I received the item in good shape. Unfortunately the dac does not work well with hi-fi XLR based preamps/dacs (outputs only white noise via XLR)

See below the reply from the manufacturer:

The first gen dac1541 have chassis ground wired to xlr ground pin, which is the pro way of doing it. i since found out that not all consumer balanced equipment do that, most have the xlr gound to signal gound, which can create problems.... If possible, try connecting signal ground (t.ex from one RCA connector) to the dac1541 shield (the chassis), and see what happens.
